Hobart Nantz Jr.

Retired Command Sergeant Major Hobart Nantz Jr. passed away at Baptist Health after battling kidney failure on March 1, 2024. He was born in Helton, KY on August 17, 1929 to Hobart Nantz and Mary Farley. Hobart served honorably in the United States Army for 24 years and retired in 1970. He received many awards and decorations among which were the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Bronze Star with Valor including Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachute Badge. After retiring from the Army, He began a second career with the Department of Corrections where he achieved the rank of Captain. He served at Luther Luckett Correctional Facility, KY State Reformatory and North Point Training Center where he was a warded Kentucky Correctional Officer of the Year in 1984. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Olen and Thomas Nantz, and his first wife, Gerda Gasche Nantz. He is survived by his wife Marjorie and two children, Michael Nantz and Janice White; three stepchildren, Jackie Bryant, Gwen Kloeppel and Yvonne Reynolds; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Hobart was a good man who loved his country and dearly loved his family. He was so proud of all his kids. He was always there to help when there was someone in need, always had a word of advice when needed, always told a good joke and he made the best cornbread ever! Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Hobart managed his illness with strength and grace. In his final moments of his life, he was surrounded by those who loved him most. The service will be held at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Radcliff, KY on Monday, March 4th, at 10:30 a.m. where he will be laid to rest with his comrades.
