James Alton "Al" Rider, 86, of Elizabethtown passed away January 24, 2024 at his home. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth Ann Rider, his daughter Julie (John) Sparrow; his three grandchildren, Jonathan Rider Sparrow (Stephanie), Jackson Cade Sparrow, and Cali Wayne Sparrow; his two great grandchildren, Jackson Wayne Sparrow and Lillian James Sparrow. Al Rider was born May 31, 1937 in Upton, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Ruth Rider and Verna and Gilmore Jaggers; his brother, Larry McKinley. He was a former teacher in Hardin County and Elizabethtown Independent School Systems. He was an assistant basketball coach and teacher at Elizabethtown High School. He owned and operated Rider's Clothing Store in Elizabethtown for 43 years. He was a long-time member of Severns Valley Baptist Church where he was active in many positions. He was the first president of the A M Rotary Club in Elizabethtown. He served on the First Federal Bank Board of Directors. Visitation will be at Brown Funeral Home on Sunday, January 28 from 2-6 p.m. and will continue on Monday after 9 a.m. until time of service. The funeral will be at Severns Valley Baptist Church on Monday, January 29, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Severns Valley Baptist Church Building Fund or Hosparus.
