Sharon J. Macy

Sharon J. Macy, 65 of Elizabethtown, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023 at University of Louisville Hospital. She was a native of Hardin County and was a retired teacher with the Hopkins County School District. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, James and Maxine Weaver Macy; and one brother, James G. Macy. Survivors include three sisters, her twin, Karen Macy of Elizabethtown, Brenda Macy of Elizabethtown, and Honey (Jim) Higdon of Glendale; four nieces and nephews, Cherish (Robby) Cothern, Andrew Higdon (Kyra), Macy Higdon (Jesse), and Alex Higdon (Abigail); five great nieces and nephews, Hunter (Kaylee), Madison, and Logan Cothern, Liam and Calvin Cruz; and her beloved baby dog, Max Dean. Sharon graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1976. At EHS, she was a groundbreaker in girls sports where she ran track and cross country on the first girls teams and was a member of the first EHS girls basketball team. Sharon attended Murray State University where she was a member of both the Womens Track and Cross-Country teams. While participating in track and cross country, she earned all Ohio Valley Conference honors in long distance running. She was graduated from Murray State in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She also earned a Master of Science degree in 1991 from MSU. She carried her love of distance running into her adult life, participating in many marathons and mini marathons. The highlight of her running career was participating in the New York City Marathon in 1987. However, the longest marathon in which she participated was her years long battle with health issues. To quote a former neighbor: She ran the marathon of her life that many could not have. She will be forever remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, her penchant for telling stories, and her love of dogs. The impact our sister Sharon had on the lives of others was wide and far-reaching. The funeral is Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Hanna officiating. Burial follows in Hardin Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and continue after 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
