Rita M. Ray

Rita M. Ray passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, August 30, 2023. Rita was born in Berlin, Germany on July 5, 1928. As a young teenager, Rita survived the bombing of her home in World War II. At the end of the war, Rita was engaged by the Allied Armed Forces to serve as a translator for the American occupying forces; the service brought Rita to the attention of Sgt. Arthur S. Ray, who she married in 1948. Rita and Arthur had two children, Carmen and Jason, who have survived her passing. She was a sponsor and leader of the Vine Grove Girl Scouts of America troop for more than 30 years, advocating for and achieving inclusion of African American girls in the Vine Grove troop. Rita was one of the founders of the Bluegrass Kennel Club. She was a breeder of multiple American Kennel Club National Grand Champion Cairn Terriers. Rita was a friend to all animals and a generous supporter of the Animal Refuge Center in Vine Grove for many years. Rita shared her passion and knowledge of UK Basketball, especially with Jason and Vickie. She was honored for her community service as a Kentucky Colonel in 1980. Rita loved hosting her July 4th, Halloween, and New Year's Eve parties for family and friends. Her colorful life was enhanced by all who savored her German cuisine, Christmas cookies, and the apple jacks that friends and family spoke of in hoarse and hallowed whispers. She rests in peace. A graveside service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Brigid Cemetery in Vine Grove. Visitation will be Monday from 11 to 12:30 pm at Brown Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Refuge Center in Vine Grove. Condolences may be expressed online at brownfuneral.com.
