LTC (ret.) Dallas W. Halcomb

Dallas Wayne Halcomb of Glendale passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 25, 2023. Dallas, born April 19, 1939 in Verona, Ky., was the son of J. H. and Ruby Taylor Halcomb. He was raised by his loving grandparents, Tolman and Isabelle Halcomb, from an early age. He graduated from Knox Central High School in Barbourville, Ky., and the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He entered the Army and attended Officers Training School. He completed two tours in Vietnam as an aviator, flying helicopters and reconnaissance airplanes. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star for heroics there, as well as other awards. He also had tours of duty as a commanding officer in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. He retired after 31 years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was married to Patricia Johnson, a high school classmate, for 60 years. They had two children, Whitney Payne (Chad) and Brett Halcomb (Vicki). Sadly, Brett passed in 2012. Dallas and Pat are proud grandparents to Spencer and Mitchell Payne and Savannah and Dallas Gibbs Halcomb. After retiring from military service, Dallas spent several decades as a volunteer kicking and special teams coach for East Hardin, Central Hardin, and John Hardin High Schools. Through his commitment as a coach, Colonel, led many players to achieve success in college, particularly through the receipt of scholarships. Always a leader, he had been a member of the Glendale Lions Club. He enriched many lives with his generosity especially by providing educational support. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, and his grandchildren; his brothers Tom Halcomb, Gary Halcomb, and John (Jonda) Halcomb, and his sister Janet (Pete) Maric; nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as former football players and many friends. His funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Wednesday, August 30, at Glendale Christian Church followed by burial with military funeral honors at 1:30pm at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 29, from 5:00-8:00pm as well as preceding the funeral, beginning at 10:00am. There will be a reception at Glendale Christian Church Fellowship Hall following the interment.
