Helen Louise West

June 1, 2023, Helen Louise West, age 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Early that morning, the clouds lifted, and the angels shepherded her to heaven. Helen Louise was born frail on December 23, 1938 to Lucille Skaggs. It was surely a cold night in Terre Haute Indiana, and she weighed a little over 3 lbs. They were very poor, and the Doctor told them to lay her in a shoe box by the coal stove as she would likely not make it through the night. Little did he know that God knew she was mighty and had other plans for her. Her Sister Norma nursed her along and she grew healthier every day. Together with the grace of God they overcame many hurdles. Helen and Norma (Sister is what Helen would call her) were joined by other siblings, Jimmy, Timmy, Diane, Francis, and Barbie. Helen contributed professionally several years in Labor and Delivery at Hardin Memorial Hospital and drove a school bus for Fort Knox High School yet her main passion was taking care of her family. Helen was always a military wife and over the years separately supported her spouses, Thomas Fox,Grover McClanahan, and survived by her husband Charles West through their military careers. Overall, she had 5 beautiful daughters which Helen loved dearly including their spouses are Pam and Lou, Karen, Teresa and Kenny, Kim and Scott, and Kelly and Troy. Joined by 15 adored grandchildren Jeramey, Sarah, Heather, Douglas, Jesse, Stephanie, Stacey, Kyle, Travis, Ryan, Cody, Courtney, Tyler, Caity, and Cary. One of Helen's most treasured gifts was knowing and loving her 19 great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Kaia, Devaney, Dominic, Donovan, Daniel, Caiden, Skylar, Lucian, Vayda, Blake, Quinn, Nash, Nolan, Michael, Scarlett, Hunter, Damon, and Owen. Helen loved spending time with each one either through a visit, phone call and facetime her family was a tremendous source of joy, peace, and comfort to her. Helen loved her canine companion, Mickey. Helen was strong willed which kept her with her family longer than likely intended, a lover, a fighter, feisty, fearless, fun, with a great sense of humor, loyal, brave, adventurous, outspoken, intelligent, giving, nurturing Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Wife, Friend and so much more. Helen committed herself to Christ-heaven just welcomed a new Angel. A Celebration of Life will be on June 20, 2023 at 9:00AM for family only and from 10AM-12PM for others at Brown Funeral Home 306 College Street, Elizabethtown, Kentucky 42701 (270) 765-2737.
