Martha Ellen Massie

Martha Ellen Massie was born the second of seven children on June 29, 1943 to a young soldier, preparing for war, and his beautiful wife. On Friday, Nov. 25, 2022 at the age of 79, she crossed the river Jordan. Baptized Catholic within days of birth Martha attended Nazareth Academy in Bardstown and Elizabethtown Catholic High School. Throughout her life she traveled extensively and, as a child, was particularly fond of climbing palm trees in San Juan Puerto Rico where she made her First Communion. She also stayed a summer in Ecuador with her friend and would often recount the story of swimming in the bay with pigs. During the 1970's Martha served in the Army Reserve and lived in Germany fully participating in German culture to include the Oktoberfest and Volksmarches. During her life she visited Paris, London, The White Cliffs of Dover, and the Aztec ruins in Mexico. Martha worked hard at many places to include Fort Knox Civil Service and for the Hardin County School Board. She also served as a reporter for the Radcliff Sentinel covering stories in Hardin County. She was a founder of Mill Creek Properties, Inc. and owned and managed rental properties. Martha volunteered in many community service organizations, completed the Radcliff /Vine Grove Community Leadership Class and acted in several plays with the Hardin County Playhouse. She never participated in a production of Grease, but if she had she would have been cast as Rizzo and would have enjoyed the line, "You goody-goodies are too much for me". Martha was an avid reader and possessed an extensive library. She was particularly fond of Stephen King novels. She loved to play bingo, work crossword puzzles, watch Jeopardy, and listen to the Beatles. "Hey Jude" was her favorite song. She had a life-long love of animals, often taking in strays. Her favorite was her cat, Sissy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin and Margaret Massie, her infant son Frank, and three brothers, John, Raymond, and Jim Massie. Martha is survived by three children Laura (Rod) McDonald, Greg (Sunea) Thompson and Justin Massie. A brother Stephen (Leorah) Massie, and two sisters, Mary Massie and Judy (Stan) Love. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her family will be forever grateful that she passed on to us a love for learning, a desire for adventure, a healthy disrespect for authority, and a strong fighting spirit. A private family service will be held on her behalf. Condolences may be expressed online at www.brownfuneral.com.
