James Carleton Barnhart

James Carleton Barnhart went to be with his heavenly father on August 5, 2021 at Baptist Health Hardin Hospital. James was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania on March 3, 1922 to Charles Grant Barnhart and Annie Weimer Barnhart. He joined the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment - 101st Airborne Division with the U.S. Army in 1942. He was wounded in Belgium in 1945 during WWII and received a Purple Heart. He was later wounded in the Korean War and received a second Purple Heart. He received the Good Conduct Medal Clasp (4th award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster) and the National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster). James retired as First Lieutenant in 1972, later retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Captain and went on to work in civil service until retiring in 1987. James got his Master's Degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1972 in Political Science and Minored in History. He was the U.S. Army Command Historian for the US in Korea. James was a member of St. James Catholic Church and he and Lucy traveled the world but Germany was his favorite place to visit. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucy Cruz Barnhart and his good friend and neighbor Carolyn Kifer Ritchie. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 12th at 12:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff. Condolences may be expressed online at www.brownfuneral.com.
