Robert Hayes Townsend

Robert Hayes Townsend, 80, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Detroit, Michigan, an army veteran, and retired from Orr Safety Corporation in Louisville. He was a member of Round Top Baptist Church and American Legion #113. He worked in the nuclear field at Atomics International in California and was involved with the space industry and nuclear submarines. He was responsible for making sure people weren't overexposed to radiation. He was a Hudson Motor car enthusiast and was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Verna Hayes Townsend, by a son, Robert M. Townsend, and by a brother, Roger Townsend. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Winnie Huffer Townsend, one daughter, Sandy (Ron) Williams of Bowling Green, two sons, Daniel C. (Eileen) Townsend and Jeffrey H. (Heather) Townsend all of Elizabethtown, five grandchildren, Bethany Milburn, Amanda Williams, Zach Townsend, Caleb Townsend and Jacob Townsend, and one great grandchild, Adelaide Milburn. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Donnie Davis officiating. Burial with military honors, will be in Round Top Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday after 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may go to the Gideons' or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
