Omar McGrew

Omar Lee McGrew, 92, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Big Clifty, a WWII Army veteran, a member of the tenth armor division, and was retired from the U.S. Army Armor Engineer Board. He was a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church and Stephensburg Masonic Lodge #212. Omar played gospel music with Wayne Cardin and various gospel groups for nineteen years. He graduated from Leitchfield High School in 1941. He was a long distance runner having run seventeen different marathons and over 84,000 miles. Most of the marathons were run after the age of sixty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Ina Franklin McGrew, a brother, Buddy McGrew and a son in law, Larry Cheatham. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Martha Harned McGrew, four daughters, Bonnie Cheatham, Peggy McGrew and Patty (Jeff) Holleran all of Elizabethtown and Cathy (Jim) Tuck of Cottontown, TN, seven grandchildren, Tim Skaggs, Kim Rhyne, Christy Catron, Eric Meredith, William Cheatham, Hollye Hornsby and Sean Holleran, 11 great grandchildren, one nephew, Danny McGrew and one niece, Sara McGrew. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel at Severans Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Langley and Bill and Donella Taylor officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
