Jack Handy Snyder

Jack Handy Snyder of Elizabethtown Kentucky passed away at the age of 93. He passed at home, surrounded by his family. He was raised on a farm in Pulaski County Kentucky and graduated from Science Hill High School in 1948. He was a partner with his father on the farm until the Korean War, when he was drafted in the army. He served with the 25th Infantry Division Reconnaissance Company in Korea. Upon return from the war he took advantage of the G.I. Bill and graduated from University of Kentucky with a Degree in Agriculture, and later a Masters Degree in Agronomy. He started his career in 1957 with the Cooperative Extension Service in Larue County as Assistant County Extension Agent. He transferred to Owen County and then to Bullitt County as County Extension Agent. In 1966 he transferred to Hardin County as Extension Agent for Agriculture and Development. He was extremely effective in recruiting and developing leadership for 12 agriculture commodity groups. These programs have resulted in a cadre of leadership that improved the standards of rural income and family living. He has also been very involved with Rotary Club, Heartland Festival, Farm City, Farm Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Hardin County Fair, Fort Knox Allied Officers Training, General Telephone Advisory Panel, Severns Valley Baptist Church and many other community endeavors. Mr. Snyders leadership and pioneer-type accomplishments benefited the total extension service and general community in Hardin County and the state of Kentucky. He was an avid University of Kentucky fan and season football ticket-holder for over 50 years. He loved sharing the games with his friends. After his retirement in 1990, his pride and joy became his family garden and his grandson. He tended both with love and care. His retirement also centered on continued service at Severns Valley Baptist Church and with his family. He treasured both greatly. He is now at his forever home with Jesus. He was preceded in death by his father, David Smith Snyder and mother Mae DeLoach Snyder. They had nine children. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Willis Nelson Snyder and Joe Dee Snyder and his sisters Dorothy Spears, Fern Snyder, and Dovie Snyder. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jo (Chaney) Snyder, his son Stuart Morgan Snyder (Laura), and grandson Andrew Morgan Snyder; his brothers, Bill Berlin Snyder and Ralph Clifford Snyder and his sister Arlee Dagley. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Emory Riley officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.
