Lowell Edward Smith, Sr., age 73 of Elizabethtown, passed away on Thursday, November 3, at Baptist Health Hardin. A native of Hardin County, he was a graduate of East Hardin High School Class of 1967. Lowell graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in accounting. He retired from the Department of Defense after having served in the Marines, Navy, and Army National Guard. He served in Vietnam with the Marines and was an air traffic controller on the U.S.S. Independence and the U.S.S. America. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tina Elaine Rice Smith; his parents, Elvin Estill Smith, Sr., and Dorothy Roberts Smith; and a brother, Leroy Smith. Survivors include two sons, Lowell (Ruta) Edward Smith, Jr. of Kaunas, Lithuania, and Steven (Jessica) Smith of Elizabethtown; one brother, Elvin (Kathryn) E. Smith, Jr. of Elizabethtown; and four grandchildren, Stephanie, Ford, Chelsea, and Liam Smith. The funeral service is at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial follows in the Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be expressed online at brownfuneral.com.
