Charlie Deaton

Charlie Deaton, 84, of Elizabethtown and Vine Grove, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021. Charlie was born February 14, 1937, to Goldie and Charles Deaton, Sr., in Newport, Kentucky. A graduate of the former Vine Grove High School and a member of its only state tournament basketball team, Charlie continued his love for basketball for two seasons at the University of Louisville. He and his Louisville freshmen teammates were the first to play in Freedom Hall. Charlie married his partner in life and in golf, Rosemary, in 1958 and joined the US Army. After his service, he taught and coached at Irvington High School and Breckinridge County High School. He received his masters degree from Western Kentucky University. In 1965, he began working with the Army Education Center at Fort Knox. He later retired from a career in civil service. When Charlie turned 50, his basketball career took on new life. Eligible to play in the Senior Games, Charlie and his teammates traveled across the US playing and winning championships for several years. He continued pick-up games until he turned 80. Throughout his retirement, he spent many years in the company of friends & family on the golf course, traveling with Rosemary to participate in couples tournaments across the state. He is a recipient of the Hardin County Schools Distinguished Alumni award & the North Hardin High School Trojan Foundation Award and has been recognized as a Kentucky Colonel. He was a deacon at Stithton and Northside Baptist churches, served as a city councilman in Vine Grove, and was a founding board member of Lincoln Trail Country Club. Charlie looked forward to the day he would be united with his Maker. Because of his love and acknowledgement of his Savior, he has been healed. Though he may be missed on this earth, there is rejoicing in Heaven. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5). Charlie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosemary, and their two children: Donna Kaye (Ted) Burch and Glenn (Ange) Deaton; four grandchildren: Bevan (Austin) Evans, Erin (Ben) Russell, Thomas Deaton, and Ramsey Deaton; one sister: Freda Blair; and honorary family members Denise Hawkins and Matt, Paula, Evan, and Anna Knowles. He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Bernice Wallace, Wanda Sheppard Summers, and Deloris Dowell; one brother, Don Deaton; and one granddaughter, Lillian Clare Deaton.
