June Gray Elmore Thornberry Raine, 94 of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, May 9, 2021 at Atria with her family by her side. June was born July 10, 1926 on College Street in Hardin County, KY and married her first husband, Jimmy Thornberry in 1949. June began her banking career with Lincoln National Bank in Hodgenville in 1944. She and the family moved to Owensboro, where she was a seamstress and a Mom to the growing family. The family moved back to Etown in 1963 due to her husband's job change. She resumed her banking career as a teller at Citizens Bank in 1964. She rose from Teller to Vice President, and served as the first female officer at the bank and served there for 25 years. After her first retirement, from Citizens Bank, she worked as the Finance Director for the Hardin County Sheriff's Office for five years. She retired as a deputy sheriff. June was a long-time community supporter. At her church home, St. James, she served on the PTA, was the first female lector and served for 25 years, one of the first female Eucharistic Ministers, chaired the parish's annual fundraising drive for the Archdiocese for many years and chaired the Parish Council for eight years. She was awarded a life membership in the Women's Society of Christian Service. She served the community in numerous charitable and other outreach capacities, many in leadership roles. To name a few: She served as a member and President of the Hardin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in its early days of existence. In 1975, her first husband Jimmy died in an on-the-job accident, she arrived at the hospital and noticed there was no chapel for families. She was instrumental in getting that set up. She loved assisting with the Nolin RECC Operation Round-up program that assisted with meeting on- going community needs, and served as its President for a time. Her favorite community involvement was with the Hardin County Fair Board, serving for over 35 years, as Secretary, Treasurer and Horse Show Manager during these years. Just for fun, she joyously played Mrs. Santa Claus for the local schools and nursing homes. She grew her roses and loved sewing for her four girls. She loved diving into history so that generations to come would appreciate it. Later in her life, she and her husband, Frank, enjoyed the company of the great grandchildren, and going out for a shopping and lunch day with her girls. June was known by many names: June, Mom, Ms. T, Momma Bear, June T, Granny. But the ones of which she was most proud were Mom and Granny. Her family was her most precious accomplishment. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Francis M Raine, Sr., first husband, James F. Thornberry, Mother and Father, Lela and Alvin Elmore, Sisters, Mary Katherine Billeter and Sue E Reed, and Brother, Jimmy Elmore, brother-in-laws Ralph Shumate, Bill Thornberry and Anthony Bickett; sisters-in law Marty Bickett, Kelly Shumate , Betty Elmore Coats and Jean Thornberry, daughter-in-law Sharon Thornberry; step-son, Willis Raine and grandson Matthew Thornberry. Survived by: Daughters: Susie (Bob) Spencer, Elizabethtown, Kathy (Clint) Schaffrick, Elizabethtown, Lisa (Dan) Pawley, Cecilia, Jo Ellen Mackey, Elizabethtown; Son: Bill, Vine Grove and bonus son, Marty Fulkerson (Rhonda and Dawson) Elizabethtown. Grandchildren: Allison Spencer Hill (Brian) Milton, FL; James Jason Spencer (Jennifer), Suwanee, GA; Sarah Spencer Howard (Shane), Elizabethtown, KY; Robert Justin Spencer (Mara) Tallahassee, FL; Kyle William Schaffrick, Chicago, IL; Aaron Pawley, Atlanta, GA; Elizabeth Pawley, Cincinnati, OH; and Rebecca Mackey Faust (Daniel fiancé), Gainesville, VA. Great Grandchildren: Spencer and Madison Gray Hill; Garrett, Tyler and Jordan Spencer; Mallie June, Jack, Luke and Ella Cate Spencer; Addison Raine and Aiden Clinton Howard and , Noah, Hailey and Caleb Howard. Brother: William Owen Elmore (Liz), Plains, OH, In-Laws: Don Thornberry, Louisville, KY. Step Children: Frankie (Agnes) Raine, Sharon Ley, daughter-in-law Jan Raine. She is also survived by Franks Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. She was a beloved aunt and survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Executive Pastor Marty Fulkerson and Deacon Bill Clark officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 to 2 p.m. Thursday. In honor of June's community service, the family asks that memorials be made to the Hospice of Central Kentucky, 105 Diecks Dr, Elizabethtown, or to the American Cancer Society, two causes most dear to her heart.
