Elizabeth Baker Hamm

Elizabeth Baker Hamm passed away on February 20th at the age of 90 with her granddaughter, Dr. Rachel Ramsey, by her side. She was born in rural Clay County Kentucky on September 5, 1930 to John Combs Baker and Edith Allen Baker. Elizabeth was the eldest of six children, but was sadly predeceased by all of her siblings. Elizabeth's elementary education was received in a one-room schoolhouse in Clay County, where her father was often the teacher. She began high school by boarding at the Foundation School at Berea and continued at Lafayette High School when the family moved to Lexington. After high school, Elizabeth attended the University of Kentucky. While at UK, she met Paul Denny Hamm, a young Army Air Corps veteran and farmer. A conversation began and romance bloomed! They were married on September 8, 1951 in North Carolina by Reverend Douglas Branch. The young couple remained at UK until Paul Denny finished a Master's Degree in Agronomy, then they moved to the family farm in the Glendale Community of Hardin County. Together they raised crops, livestock and children. Paul Denny passed away on April 10, 2014. They had been married for over 62 years. Elizabeth is survived by her children: Nellie Hamm Owen (Paul), John Bryan Hamm (Jacqueline), Vera Beth Priddy (Matthew), and Paula Denise Socia Hamm; grandchildren: David Owen (Brittney), Andrew Owen (Lindsey), Timothy Hamm (Kimberly), Mary Boston (Lance), John Alan Hamm, Wesley Paul Priddy (Michaela), Philip Priddy (Jamie), Dr. Rachel Ramsey (Lee); Caleb Priddy (fiance MacKinley), and Christopher Priddy (Brittany); and 15 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Marcia Baker, Peggy Baker and Vera Mackey, as well as three long-time caregivers and dear friends: Tina Napier, Peggy Underhill, and Donita Jaggers. She was predeceased by her siblings: Elsie Scott, Bruce Baker, Eugene Baker, Jackie Dennison, and Teresa Edwards, and by her sister-in-law, Florence Samples, and by one great-grandchild, Avalyn Owen. Elizabeth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hodgenville and the Glendale Homemakers Club. She was an accomplished cook and skilled seamstress, a faithful Christian, a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She was loved beyond measure and will be greatly missed. Services will be held February 24 at Brown Funeral Home but will be private due to Covid-19. The family plans to hold a celebration of her life later this year.
