Leroy Herman Smith

Leroy Herman Smith, 63, U.S. Army retired, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at University of Louisville Hospital. Leroy was a native of Hardin County. He graduated from East Hardin High School in 1971 and was a member of the band. Following graduation from Western Kentucky University in 1976, he enlisted into U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and attended armor officer basic course at Fort Knox. He was stationed in Germany for over 10 years and served in Operation Desert Storm. After retirement from the army, he trained active and reserve units at the brigade and battalion level. He was an avid supporter and longtime member of American Legion Post 113. He served Post 113 in numerous capacities, most notably as commander in 1998. He was also named Legionnaire of the Year for post 113 in 2014. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Smith of Elizabethtown; two step-children, Olivia and Henry Roberts, both of Louisville; two brothers; Elvin Smith Jr. and his wife Kathryn of Elizabethtown and Lowell Smith of Winchester; 4 nephews, Steve Smith of Elizabethtown, Eddie Smith and his wife Clarissa of Louisville, Dr. Donald Smith and his wife Dr. Jennifer Mize Smith of Bowling Green, Eddie Smith and his wife Jennifer of Nashville; 1 niece, Georgeanne Stepp and her husband Chris of Bowling Green. The funeral is at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20th, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial follows with full military honors at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff. There will be a reception at American Legion Post 113 following the funeral. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Thursday and continues at 10 a.m. Friday before the funeral. There will be an American Legion service at 7 p.m. Thursday during the visitation time. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to American Legion Post 113.
