Jerry Wayne Day

Jerry "J.W." Day, 70, left his earthly home in Elizabethtown to enter his heavenly home at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2016. He was born April 14, 1946 to Jerome and Luberta McCamish Day in Owensboro. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Brent Day. Jerry retired from Green River Steel with 29 years of service. After retirement, he was a truck driver. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after 3 1/2 years of service in Germany, where he earned a sharpshooter medal. He was a member of Whitesville Baptist Church and attended Severns Valley Baptist Church regularly. He had a passion for music and played the steele guitar for many years. He enjoyed hunting and working in his shop and spent many happy times traveling with his wife. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sister, Bonnie Richards; step daughter, Melissa McIntosh; stepson, Christopher Vanetter; six step grandchildren, nieces, Cheryl Hardin and Debbie Benningfield and nephews, Donald Wayne Richards and Byron Day and many wonderful friends and neighbors who have been so caring and thoughtful through his short illness and death. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continue after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to Severns Valley Baptist Church.
