John Paul Lewis, Sr.

John Paul Lewis, Sr. 85 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, September 26, 2016 at Helmwood Health Care. He was a native of Prescott, Iowa, was a retired SFC with the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and attended Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He was a salesman for Swope Motors and Wilson Oldsmobile, former agent for Shelter Insurance, and a bus driver for Larue County Schools and Shockey Tours. He drove for Ruggles Sign Company in Versailles, was the former owner of Lewis Tax Office and was a graduate of the Hardin County Farm Co-op school. His first job was as a paperboy for President Harry S. Truman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Mae Lawler Lewis; a daughter, Patricia D. Lewis; his parents, Earl C. and Edith Pearl Woolsey Lewis; a brother, Billy Lewis and two sisters, Alice Gunter and Roberta Davis. He is survived by two sons, John P. (Betsy) Lewis, Jr. of Dallas, TX and Ronald D. (Maggie) Lewis of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Debbie Sharon of Lexington; grandchildren, Christine Lewis Selvaggio, Dustin Lewis, Kelly Lewis, April Sharon and James Sharon; great grandchildren, Pelle Krabbenhoeft, Addie Krabbenhoeft, Sophie Lewis, Nola Sharon and Finn Sharon and his best friend, Dean Chaney. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Shannon McCubbins officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continue after 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
