Loren Earl Sommerfield

Loren Earl Sommerfield, 87 of Elizabethtown, died Friday, June 24, 2016 at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. He was a native of Viroqua, WI, a member of St. James Catholic Church and Elizabethtown Knights of Columbus Council #1455. He retired from the U.S. Navy where he served in the Korean War. His ship supported the Inchon Invasion. He retired from Gates Rubber Company in 1988 after 22 1/2 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Earl and Hazel Thompson Sommerfield and a son-in-law, Chris Mariner. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Rapier Sommerfield; one son, Loren Paul (Valerie) Sommerfield of Frankfort; three daughters, Laura Mariner of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, Lisa (Mike) Starr of Elizabethtown and Lynne S. (Nirav) Sheth of Bedford, Mass. and five grandchildren, Samantha Starr, Chase Mariner, Kiran Sheth, Elena Sheth and David Sommerfield. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Church with Rev. Martin Linebach officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and continue after 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home. A Prayer Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Refuge Center (a no kill shelter) 185 Basham Trail, Vine Grove, KY 40175 or to the Knights of Columbus Council #1455.
