Lucy Kerrick

Lucy Jeanette Kerrick of Elizabethtown died Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Kensington Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a long battle with kidney disease. Although she never married, Lucy leaves behind a loving and devoted family. She is survived by her sister, Mary Alice Hayen (J.B., now deceased) of Elizabethtown; 17 nieces and nephews; 38 great-nieces and nephews; 42 great-great-nieces and nephews; and extended family, Mike and Moninda Coyle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Merritt and Helen (Boyd) Kerrick; and brothers, sisters and their spouses, Merritt (Thelma) Kerrick, Paul (Mayme) Kerrick, Helen (Galon) Ashlock, Ruth (Damon) Kinser, Clara (Harry) Davis and Aline Bewley. Her sister, Gladys, died at age 7 and a brother, Harold, died at 18 months. Lucy was born Feb. 3, 1932, at 604 N. Main St., now the home of United Way of Central Kentucky, where she resided 82 years. Upon graduation from Elizabethtown High School in 1949, she went to work at Diecks Lumber Co. When the owner, Clifford Diecks, died in 1971, she became the manager until her retirement in April 2002. During her lifetime, she was very active in the Elizabethtown community. Lucy was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school, worked with youth during the Christian Training Hour and sang in the choir. She was a charter member of the Hardin County A.M. Rotary. Lucy served the Rotary club in many positions: president, secretary and treasurer. She was a member of the Elizabethtown-Hardin County Heritage Council; Elizabethtown-Hardin County Chamber of Commerce; board of director member for Helping Hand; board member for Kentucky Food Bank and served on the board for the Hardin County Extension Council. In 1996, she was awarded the prestigious Athena Award, given annually by the Elizabethtown-Hardin County Chamber of Commerce to an outstanding businesswoman. Lucy loved to travel. When her brother-in-law and sister would say, “Let’s go somewhere,” she was quick to pack her bags. Often, those trips were visits to see family members living outside of Kentucky. After her retirement, she and her sisters made several trips across Kentucky and Tennessee. Before developing kidney disease, Lucy and two of her sisters were able to take a memorable cruise to Key West, Florida. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, at First Christian Church in Elizabethtown with Pastors Chris Kiger and Mike Bell officiating. Burial follows at Elizabethtown City Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown and continues at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
