John Robert Walker

John Robert Walker, Sr., 81, of Elizabethtown, died Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Hardin Memorial Hospital surrounded by his wife and four children. Easter was a fitting day for him to be united with his Savior since he spent his life sharing with others the importance of Christ's crucifixion for forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal life that Christians have because of the resurrection. Now he is experiencing that eternal life in Christ. Among other things, his family will remember the consistency with which he practiced at home what he preached in the pulpit. He was born in San Augustine, TX, raised near Pleasanton, TX, and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1958. He was an Army Ranger with the 101st Airborne Division when he received God's call into full-time gospel ministry in 1962. John pastored churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Oklahoma from 1963 through 1993 and served as Director of Missions for the Severns Valley Association of Baptist Churches from 1993-2004. He was a faithful member of Severns Valley Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Nettie Brittain Walker and a sister, Nettie Jo Schmedt. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret "Peggy" Willett Hays Walker of Elizabethtown; three sons, John Robert (Ruth) Walker, Jr. of Nicholasville, Stephen Wayne (Danielle) Walker of Knoxville, TN, and Phillip Brittain (Susie) Walker of Pensacola, FL; one daughter, Margaret Mary "Maggie" (Rich) McKinney of Knoxville, TN; ten grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Nathan, Elayna, Olivia, Brooke, Jonathan and Katie Walker and Katelyn and Kelsey McKinney and two foster grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday, March 30th, at Severns Valley Baptist Church at 11:00am. Burial will follow with a graveside service at 3:00pm at Buck Grove Baptist Church in Meade County. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29th, at Brown Funeral Home from 5:00-8:00pm and continuing Wednesday at 10:00am at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention through Severns Valley Baptist Church, 1100 Ring Road, Elizabethtown, KY 42701.
