Irene Belt Lewis

Irene Belt Lewis, 95 of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Helmwood Healthcare. Born Ellen Irene Belt, November 22, 1920, to Banus Belt and Llewellyn Goldie Prentice Belt, on the Springfield Road in Hardin County, Kentucky. Mrs. Lewis was a 1939 graduate of Elizabethtown High School and a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where she sang in the choir, taught second grade Sunday school and was a member of the Co-Workers Sunday school class. She was a talented artist and enjoyed crafting for others, including chalk drawings during revivals, making table favors for the church's Christmas banquet, taking art classes & sharing her abilities with others. Her first job was with the American Needlecraft Company as bookkeeper. In April, 1947, she was hired as clerk for First Federal Saving & Loan Association, making her way through the ranks to serve as secretary/treasurer or comptroller, working full time until her retirement in April, 1985. She remained on the Board of Directors until November, 2000. In October, 1951, she married William Henry Lewis, and they were blessed with two children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry Lewis, her siblings, Shirley Bernice Belt Botto, James Roy Belt, Banus Lloyd "Bud" Belt and Patricia Lynne Belt Neier. She is survived by her children, Terry Wayne Lewis (Andrea Beth Campbell), Hampton, TN, and Betty Lynne Lewis Sayre (Wayne Austin Sayre), Russellville, KY, one brother-in-law, Ivan Kenneth Neier, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Lina Goodrich and the staff at Ryan's Restaurant for the loving care they extended to her over many years. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church with Rev. Wayne Sayre, Bro. Chris Kiger and Bro. Doug Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Hardin Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home and continue after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to First Christian Church building fund. Condolences may be expressed online at www.brownfuneral.com.
