Doris Joann Marini

Doris Joann Marini, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at age 82. She was born January 29, 1938 in Crawford County, Indiana to Albert and Gertie Mahoney. The family later moved to New Albany, Indiana where she attended elementary and high school. She was awarded a scholarship to the Norton School of Nursing in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated as a registered nurse in 1958. In November 1957, she married then Lt. James L. Marini. He left for Germany after the wedding and she finished her schooling and worked at Children's Hospital in Louisville until she joined him in Erlangen, Germany. She then began her life as a devoted, supportive, and loyal army wife for 25 years. While at Erlangen she worked as a nurse at the Nuremberg Army Hospital. Later she worked at Army hospitals in Maryland and Kentucky and volunteered at other locations. On her second tour to Germany she served as a mentor, counselor, and example to the wives in her husband's command. Following this tour at Baumholder, the family of four was assigned to S.H.A.P.E. at Mons, Belgium. After completing this tour they returned to Fort Knox where she worked as a school nurse on post. During her life as an army wife she experienced two hardship tours, one while her husband was in Korea and the second when he was in Vietnam. Doris enjoyed going to auctions, estate sales, and yard sales and had booths at local shops. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim; her sister, Sherry Anderson of New Albany, Indiana; daughter, Jennifer Marini of Elizabethtown; son, Andrew Marini of Elizabethtown; granddaughter, Tara Singer; grandson, Dominic Marini; and two great grandchildren. The funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Monday and continues after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hosparus in honor of Doris Marini.
